There are at least three can’t-miss activities in the Expo Center this year, not including the perennial favorite activity of NEA RA delegates—picking up free stuff to stock classrooms and use with students! The Expo Center is open in the Colorado Convention Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
First, don’t miss the opportunity to sign up for the NEA Great Public Schools (GPS) Network— an online gathering place for teachers, parents, education support professionals, and community members to share ideas and resources. Members can collaborate in specific groups around subjects as varied as “Common Core math in 5th grade” and “teacher evaluation” to “technology in the high school classroom.” Participation in the GPS network also provides access to NEA events, like ongoing book clubs, and helpful resources, like NEA’s Common Core State Standards Toolkit.

Second, for all who care about the college affordability crisis in the U.S., where student debt has topped $1 billion total and graduating seniors walk away with nearly $30,000 in loans, on average, head over the “NEA Degrees Not Debt” campaign booth and take the Degrees Not Debt pledge. Volunteers, like City Colleges of Chicago professor Curtis Keyes, Jr., also will hook you up with a Degrees Not Debt T-shirt and button.

And finally, after you’ve filled your bag with free Bic pens and Lysol cleaning products, and browsed the educational games and graduate-degree programs, you can’t leave the Expo without a visit to the NEA Member Benefits (MB) area. In addition to information about NEA MB’s financial products, travel services, and more, you have a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity! Climb aboard the life-sized model of a Western-saddled horse, grab a 10-gallon hat, and lasso the opportunity to prove you’re part of the largest democratic body in the nation!
